[ TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE > FAN CONTRIBUTIONS ]

One of the many great ideas to come out of the survey I carried out at the beginning of 2002, asking fans to submit their suggestions and requests for possible special features on the DVD, was to include an 'Outback Character Profile' somewhere on the disc. For those who aren't familiar with Outback, he is an 'Australian' G1 character, and so it was decided that he would make a very fitting addition to the Australian release of the DVD.

Following on from that suggestion, TAAU came up with the idea to run a community-wide competition, open to all Australian fans, to design an original artwork/illustration of Outback in all his glory. The prize for the competition was to have the winning entry encoded on to the actual DVD itself!

Listed below are details of that competition, as well as some of the superb submissions we received from fans all over Australia:

ORIGINAL 'OUTBACK' CHARACTER DESIGN COMPETITION (FROM OCTOBER 2002)

"Now, I know that none of the Transformers can technically claim to be any 'nationality' on Earth, being from Cybertron as they are, but as Outback is a very 'Australian' character, and spends most of his time patrolling the Outback, then Madman liked our idea and decided to go ahead with it.

Madman mentioned recently that they hadn't yet created an Outback design for this Character Profile screen on the DVD, and so we suggested perhaps running a competition to let the Australian fans design their own, with the winning entry possibly being used on the actual DVD. Madman liked that idea and have given the go-ahead for it!

This is an open competition free to any Australian resident to enter, and the deadline for artwork submissions is October 28, which gives you plenty of time to create your masterpieces.

On October 29th we'll post all the designs submitted to us online, allowing all of you to choose the best entries which will then be forwarded to Madman for their consideration."

THE ENTRIES:

In all we had five submissions from four entrants, all of whom did a superb job and should be proud of their work!

As you can see from our last picture, we also had a very special 'postcard' from Outback's 'manager' (sent in by SKY SHADOW), thanking everyone for going to all this trouble on his behalf.

And here's what the postcard said:

"This picture was taken last week on one of his rugged adventures, in this case to Ayres rock. He [Outback] wishes everyone the best of luck for the competition, and is thrilled that he's finally getting some recognition as one of a handful of Australian Transformers, along with Beast Wars' Snarl and Beast Wars II's Tasmanian Kid, naturally.

THE WINNER IS ANNOUNCED:

Out of all those excellent entries, here's Madman's email regarding the winner:

"Hi Stephen,

W ell, following some consultation with Tim and the Madman design boys upstairs, I think I’ve decided on a winner: we like Ravage's first entry!

The other guys all did a great job as well, and if I can get the time from the guys doing the encoding we might try and feature them all on there somewhere.

So there you go, congratulations Ravage, you did a great job and I hope everyone enjoyed the competition!

Many thanks to everyone who submitted entries for this competition, you all did a superb job and produced some great art!

We would also like to thank TAAU members Admiral Lilwall - for dreaming up the idea to include an Outback Profile on the DVD in the first place - and Blaster for all the multimedia submissions he mailed to us, including a copy of Stan Bush's video clip, The Touch.
